SIMM Computer Memory Outdated?Are you old enough to remember what simm computer memory looked like? Some computer collectors still look for this type of memory for their older computers. Most of these computers used simm computer memory. Have you ever looked at a really old computer? It looks totally different from what modern computers look like. That is because everything was different. The Memory was either integrated onto the Motherboard itself, or in cases where it was an expandable card, that card varies anywhere from 32 pins to 72 pins and instead of using ram memory we used Simm computer memory. When the Pc first came out on the market computer memory took on many forms some of it was soldered ontu the circuit boards themselves, others were placed into DIP sockets. The problem that occurred later was that people were not able to upgrade this kind of memory. They also took up a lot of space, and that is when developers started to come up with memory cards and Motherboards that could house expandable memory that way when a person needed more memory it could be added into the pc. The first types of memory module to appear on the market were the single in line memory module, otherwise known as SIMM computer memory. This type of memory was used by most home computers in the 80's and early 90's. The first 32 pin SIMM computer memory modules where used in the 286 and 386 computers. In the 90s the SIMM memory module was changed a little, the processors needed a bit more from the memory module so the 72 pin SIMM computer memory appeared on the market. These were used for the 486 computers of the time. This is the period of time where developers where trying to make the memory perform better, and that is why you will see such a wide variety of different types od 72 pin SIMM computer memory. At the time SIMM computer memory was quite expensive so there was a mad race to make memory faster, more efficient and less expensive. The next step in the memory evolution was the invention of the DIMM memory module. This type of memory differed from the SIMM. So now where the SIMM computer memory was single in line memory module, the DIMM was a dual in line memory module, with double the power of the SIMM memory modules. The DIMM memory modules were 168 pins and worked much better with the higher powered Pentium Processors that were coming out at the time. The DIMM memory modules were used in the Pentium I and sometimes Pentium II desktop computer systems. Today the DDR SDRAM is the newes memory type and has 184 pins. The difference between regular SDRAM and DDR SDRAM is that the computer will be able to write on both edges of a clock in the DDR SDRAM and that makes data transfer rates go much faster. |
