Computer Memory Storage Devices - A Part Of The Computer Industry

The problem with this type of computer memory storage device is that the data is lost when the computer is turned off. Todays software requires a lot more power and so a lot of computer memory storage is required for these newer computers.

Computer memory storage devices are mounted into slots that are located on the mother board and then they transfer their data using address and data buses.

Information is then transferred from the CPU to the RAM memory and that process is called a memory cycle.

The type of computer memory storage device will differ from computer to computer that's why it is important to know what kind computer memory storage devices your computer uses.

SIMM - These are single inline memory modules and they were a part of the early computers. These chips were made in 30 pins and then in 72 pin modules.

DIMM - These are computer memory storage devices that are smaller and geared toward Notebook computers. These come in 32 bit wide/ 72 pin and als 64 bit/144 pin.

RIMM - Was invented in 1999 and this type of memory fits into the sockets that the DIMM chips fit into.

DRDRAM - This type of RAM came out at about the same time as the RIMM chip

Most of the computers today will have DRAM for their main memory instead of SRAM

although it is somewhat slower than the DRAM and is cheaper.

In order to find out what kind of RAM memory you have, you need to look at your computer manual and find out what type of memory your computer uses. If you don't have a manual then you can look at the manufacturers site and find the model number.

In the event that you cannot do this either then you need to open the machine pull out the computer memory storage devices and look to see what kind of memory it is. You can also take that memory with you to purchase additional memory.

Is Adding Memory worth the Investment?

It really depends on whether that is the only investment you need to make or not. Adding more memory is really the cheapest way of making your computer work faster. But if you have to add memory, a hard drive, an optical device then it may be well worth your time just to invest the money in another more advanced and newer computer.

If on the other hand your computer is only a year or two old, then adding computer memory can greatly increase your computers performance and you will be much happier with it.
